Dear Parents,

Children need to learn many things as they grow up.  At school, we teach children to think, to read, to write, to solve math problems, and to learn about people, places, and nature.  Children also need to learn how to act.  How you act can be just as important as what you know.  Character education focuses on helping children develop their inner selves – knowing right from wrong, behaving in ways that are fair and just, and working together with others.

We are currently focusing on perseverance.  The children will learn that perseverance involves continuing to work towards a goal when the task is difficult.   Here are some activities you can do at home to supplement our study:

• Ask your child to explain the papers and projects he or she brings home.
• Point out and commend everyday examples of perseverance that you see family members or others in your community doing – mastering how to zip up a jacket, learning to ride a bike or playing on a team that frequently loses.
• Encourage your child to find ways to persevere rather than give up.

You are your child’s most important teacher.  I want to support the work you do by making our school another resource for helping your child develop character.  Please contact me if you have any questions about our study.
