Department at the Wharton Junior High School to help students manipulate
written language in an organized, meaningful way to become creative, fluent
writers. The process we use to do this is the
Six
Traits Writing Process
What is it?
It is a process that focuses on the
development of the common traits of writing. The traits work together
to create a framework or outline for the writing process. The Six
Traits Writing Process creates a common ground and vocabulary for students
and teachers to help focus the development of a piece of writing.
Following is a detailed description of
each trait.
IDEAS AND CONTENT
The ideas are the
heart of the piece of writing. The ideas paint the picture in the reader’s
mind. Together ideas and details enrich and develop the theme. Ideas
work well when clear and detailed. Good writing makes sense. It
also includes details. Details beyond the obvious that thoughtful,
observant writers notice.
ORGANIZATION
Organization is the internal structure
of a piece of writing. When information and thoughts have been
assembled, it’s time put things together in a way that makes sense and to
hold the reader’s attention. Organization makes writing easy to
follow. Reading flows easily and is effortless from one thought to the
next.
VOICE
Voice is the heart and soul of the
writing. It is many things: individuality, perspective,
expressiveness, enthusiasm, and more. Voice has the power to hold the
reader’s attention and make the writing more enjoyable. It reveals
something about the author. The stronger the voice, the deeper the
revelation.
WORD CHOICE
Good word choice is clear, precise, and
colorful. It is the use of rich, colorful, precise language that
communicates the meaning and the attitude of the writer. Good writers
make each word count. Strong word choice is free of heavy language,
written only to impress. It is clean, clear, and to the point.
SENTENCE FLUENCY
Sentence fluency is the rhythm and flow
that makes text easy and enjoyable to read. The way the writing plays to the
ear-not just to the eye. When the read aloud the text flows and is easy to
read with lots of inflection. It is free of awkward word patterns that slow
the reader’s progress. Sentences vary in length and style, and are so well
crafted that reading aloud is a pleasure.
CONVENTIONS
Conventions are the mechanical
correctness of the piece: spelling, grammar and usage, paragraphing
(indenting in the appropriate spots)-use of capitals and punctuation.
