PROJECT IN PROGRESS

Wharton Jr. High is going through a transformation…a multi-million
dollar renovation. The new WJH will accommodate 6th, 7th and 8th grades.
Looking back, in 1962 the new High School opened and the old High School
became what is now WJH. Then it accommodated those same three grades.
In the ‘old days’, high school football was played at Wharton County
Junior College Pioneer Stadium. WCJC tore down the stadium and sold it
to Cuero High School where it stands today. The old lights for that
stadium once lit Kyle Field at Texas A&M. WISD began construction of a
new stadium. Before it was completed, WHS and WCJC football was played
here at the Jr. High field.
Additional stands were constructed that extended from 10 yard line to 10
yard line covering the concession stands. On the other side, temporary
bleachers were installed to hold the bands and student sections.
When Tiger Field was completed in the spring of 1968, the temporary
bleachers were removed and taken to a number of new locations. One such
location was over looking the Jr. High tennis courts.
As you have noticed, the tennis courts are no more. Along with the
demolition of the courts, so went the bleachers. This is to make room
for a new cafeteria.
WJH shop classes have moved the bleachers back to their original
location and are reassembling a portion of them. The shop classes will
replace the old boards with new ones. The bleachers will provide seating
for visiting football teams.
