2007 UIL Winners

 

What does UIL competition do?

  • Provides students with educational experiences through competition.
  • Promotes good sportsmanship and cooperation among member schools.
  • Motivates students to place a high priority on attending school and making better grades.
  • Nurtures self-realization and builds self-confidence.
  • Helps students feel a sense of pride and dignity.
  • Complements class work with practice and performance.
  • Helps students discover that ultimately the true meaning of winning is doing one's best.
  • Gives students joy for having done their best.

UIL Event Information

  • Student must be passing all classes

  • Competition Dates: Usually in the spring

Events

Calculator Applications- This contest is a 30-minute, 80-question, fill-in-the-blank math test, worked with a calculator. 

Dictionary Skills - This contest is a 20-minute, 40 question objective and short-answer test. 

Impromptu Speaking - Students choose from a list of topics and are given 3-minutes to prepare a speech no more than 5-minutes long.  This event is great for the student who is a quick thinker and works well under pressure.

Journal Writing - Students will write an article using a list of details provided.

Listening- While listening to a 7-10 minute passage, students take notes and then are allowed to use these notes to answer 25 objective questions. 

Maps, Graphs, Charts - Using an atlas, students will answer 75 questions in a limited amount of time.

Mathematics - Students answer 50 multiple-choice questions in 30 minutes.  Questions cover algebra and geometry.

Modern Oratory - Students write and memorize a 3-6 minute speech. Then present it without notes.

Number Sense - How many questions can a student answer correctly in 10 minutes without a calculator or scratch paper?

Oral Reading - Students prepare a selection to read aloud with expression. 

Ready Writing - Students are given 2 hours to write an essay from a choice of 2 topics.  The essay should be a well developed and clearly address the prompt.

Science - This is a 45 minute, 35 question knowledge based test. 

Spelling - Students will spell 85-160 words in 30-60 minutes.
