Honor Roll Awards |
 |
Distinguished Honor Roll
- No grade less than 90. Recognized each six weeks at the Six Weeks Award
Assembly. A student must make no grade lower than 90 for 5 six weeks periods
to be recognized for the Distinguished Honor Roll Award at the Awards of
Excellence Ceremony in May. |

Honor Roll
- No grade less than 80. Recognized each six weeks at the Six Weeks Award
Assembly. |

Perfect Attendance Awards |
 |
Perfect Attendance - Counted present
each day during 2nd period. (ADA accounting period). Excused
doctor appointments do not count against perfect attendance. Recognized each
six weeks at the Six Weeks Award Assembly for a 7th and 8th grade student. |
 |
Perfect Attendance Award - A student
who is present each day during 2nd period through the end of the 5th
six weeks will earn the Perfect Attendance Award at the Awards of Excellence
Ceremony in May. |

Outstanding Student Awards |
 |
Teachers may choose to recognize students that
have demonstrated excellence in some form in their classes.
|
 |
Awards may be presented by elective teachers
or by academic departments, (math, English, science, social studies,
reading). These awards are given at the discretion of the teachers and may
not be awarded every year.

These awards are presented at the Awards of
Excellence Ceremony in May. |
|
|
Citizenship Awards |
 |
Winners of these awards are students that
exemplify the model WJHS student. They consistently demonstrate respect for
peers, teachers, administrators, and other staff and are proud of their
school. They are involved, always willing to help and are highly responsible
citizens of the school community. |
 |
Award winners are nominated and voted on by
faculty. |
 |
This award is presented at each Six Weeks
Award Assembly to one boy and one girl from the each grade. |

Achievement Award
|
 |
Winners of this award have demonstrated
significant improvement over a period of at least six weeks. Improvement may
be in grades, behavior or both. |
 |
Award winners are nominated and voted on by
faculty. |
 |
This award is presented at each Six Weeks
Award Assembly to one boy and one girl from the each grade. |

Tiger Pride Leadership Award
|
 |
Winners of this award have demonstrated
outstanding leadership in some form. Leadership can be demonstrated in many
ways: team leadership, classroom leadership, club leadership, project
leadership, leader among peers. The winner of this award is perceived as a
leader not only by teachers and staff, but also by his or her peers.

Eye of the Tiger Award |
 |
The
winners of these awards are the boy and the girl with the highest grade point
average for all classes each six weeks. |

The grade point calculation starts over each
six weeks. |

This award is presented at each Six Weeks
Award Assembly to one boy and one girl from the each grade. |

Tiger Paw/Commitment to Character Awards |
 |
This award will be a new award beginning in the 2004-2005 school year. |
 |
Classmates and teachers will nominate candidates for these awards. A
selection committee will select winners. |
 |
The award/s will be presented to students that have demonstrated unusual
acts of kindness, taking responsibility beyond what is required, putting
forth great effort, showing respect for others, making good choices,
and/or any effort judged by the award selection committee to be
representative of outstanding character. |
 |
There is no limit to the number of award winners that can be that can be
selected, but if no outstanding candidates are nominated, no awards will
be presented |
 |
These awards will be presented during the Six
Weeks Award Assembly. |

Special 7th Grade
Awards and Recognition

|
|
Jessie B. Sandlin Award |
 |
This
award is presented on one 7th grader each year at the Awards of
Excellence Ceremony in May.
|
 |
The student selected for this award is
nominated by 7th grade social studies teachers and then voted on by
the entire 7th grade faculty. |
 |
Winner must consistently demonstrate the
following characteristics: appreciativeness, cheerfulness, consideration of
others, courteousness, dedication to task, dependability, friendliness,
honesty, obedience, respectfulness, and scholastic performance. |
|
|
Duke Scholar Recognition |
 |
Students scoring very high on their 6th
grade TAAS Math and Reading test are identified as Duke Scholars. Standard
for selection is set each year by Duke University Talent Search.
|
 |
In the past, students have had to score a near
perfect or perfect score on both tests to qualify. |
 |
Qualifying students are recognized at the
Awards of Excellence Ceremony in May. |

DAR Awards |
|
DAR American History Award
 |
The Comfort Chapter of the Daughters of the
American Revolution presents this award to one 8th grade student
each year that has demonstrated excellence in the field of American History. |
 |
The candidates are nominated by the 8th
grade History teachers and then a committee of three, appointed by the
principal selects the winner. |
 |
The winner is announced at the Awards of
Excellence Ceremony in May |

DAR Patriotism Award
 |
This award is presented by the Comfort Chapter
of the Daughters of the American Revolution to one 8th grade
student each year who has demonstrated excellence in the following areas:
Honor, Service, Courage, Leadership, Patriotism.

 |
Each 8th grade teacher nominates
and rates on a rating scale, two students. The winner is the student with the
highest combination of frequency of nominations and the highest ratings. The
8th grade faculty votes in case of a tie. |

The winner is announced at the Awards of
Excellence Ceremony in May. |
