"Working Today To Help Build a Better Future"

What is PALS?

At Wharton High School there are many different clubs and organizations, but one club that stands out from the others is PALS.  PALS stands for Peer Assistance Leadership Skills.  This is a peer helping program in which selected high school students in grades 11 and 12 are trained to work as peer helpers with students. The selection process includes the following steps: Solicitation of prospective candidates through a survey of students and staff, then an interview with the former PALS. Based on the interview, PALS are selected for the upcoming year.  This summer, the PALS attended a two-day camp held at the Wharton Junior High.  During camp they began to come together as a team, participating in activities that helped them to learn communication skills, the importance of confidentiality, and how to work together as a team.  The PALS of this year peer tutor at Hopper Elementary, Sivells Elementary, Dawson Elementary, and the junior high.  The projects they will complete include the Blood Drive, Special Olympics, Teacher Appreciation Breakfast, and a State Conference in Austin.
