Gay Whittaker is a registered nurse with 26 years experience and has worked in many different settings including: hospital, public health, home health, and schools.  She has worked many years in Wharton, including:  Texas Dept. of Health, W.I.C., and Transmed (Gulf Coast Medical Center's home health company).  This is her 2nd year at C.W. Dawson Elementary School

School Health Services

  1. Vision, hearing, spine, and acanthosis nigricans screening are performed in accordance with state laws.

  2. First aid for students that become ill or injured while at school. (Parent/guardians need to keep telephone numbers and addresses up to date in case of an emergency.

  3. Administer medications to students.

Prescription Medication

Prescription medications that must be taken during the school day must have: 

  • Written permission from parents/guardians stating the name of the medicine

  • The Dose

  • When it is to be given

  • Signature & date

  • Medication must be in a properly labeled pharmacy container

Non-prescription medications

  • Written permission from parents/guardians stating the name of the medicine

  • The Dose

  • When it is to be given

  • Signature & date

  • Medication must be in an unopened container.

All Medication will be kept in the nurse's office

 

   4.   Review and update student immunization records and notifying parents/guardians when students need immunizations in accordance with state laws

 

Parents are responsible to provide immunization records to the school as proof that the immunizations have been completed.
