Education Aide Exemption Program
House Bill 571, passed by the 75th Legislature,
created a college tuition and partial fee exemption program for individuals who
have been employed as an educational aide for one year working in a classroom
directly with students at a public school in Texas.
House Bill 1130 requires the board of trustees to establish
a local plan by January 1, 2002, to encourage the hiring of educational aides
who show a desire to become a certified teacher.
Individual who may apply must:
- Have
applied for financial aide through the college to be attended, including
filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or qualify based on
their adjusted gross income
- Be
residents of Texas
- Have
at least 1 school year of experience as an educational aide working
directly with students during the five years preceding the term or
semester for which the individual receives an award
- Be a
school employee working in any capacity
- During
the time of receiving the exemption, be enrolled in courses leading to
teacher certification, and
- Meet
the academic progress requirements of the college
