Hazel Hurd, Secretary

Hazel attended T.L. Pink High School in the Crescent Independent School District and graduated Valedictorian of the Class of 1954. She attended Wharton County Junior College from1954 - 55. She was one of the first black students to attend college there. She married Ellis Hurd on May 30, 1957. She has two sons: Melvin of Nashville, TN, and Kenneth of Rosenberg, TX. She has been a surgical nurse at Gulf Coast Medical Center for over 35 years. Her hobbies include sewing and reading.

She is very interested in the Wharton Independent School District because she believes we have very good administrators and teachers. She became interested in becoming a Board member because of her interest in the education of all children in WISD. She feels that she has been an asset to the Board because of her ethnic background and because she feels that she can act as a liaison between the school and parents.

She believes we have good students and that all students can learn. She feels that it is very important that students be guided by good parents that will guide their children in the right direction when they are not at school.

Hazel has enjoyed working with the WISD school board because she truly believes that the education of the children comes first. "If we expect good citizens in the years to come, we must have good students and citizens today."
